Very interesting story. Something like that happened to me a long time ago and I pulled my credit file to have a look at it only to find that an outstanding bill listed had actually been paid by me! I had to write to the Credit bureau to get a statement put on my file... don't know how it works in the US, but in the UK unpaid debts can remain on your file for up to seven years before being purged. Anyway after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing I got the false entry purged, but this kind of thing is always such a hassle and it took me six months. I check my credit record at least once a year now... but if you don't think there's anything to check, you normally wouldn't. In these days of identity theft it's a wise move. It only costs a few dollars to get hold of your bureau yourself. It makes me so angry when this kind of thing happens and it's you or I who have to go to the trouble to prove what we already know.
