Well, I may be writing a lot over the next couple of days. I have a lot of entries that I wanted to do, but didn’t find the time to do so. I may post several today, whereas I usually post once a day.
Right now, I wanna talk music. Recently, the “All Faves” smart playlist in my iPod hit the 200 song mark. This came just after seeing some buzz about celebrity playlists on iTunes and the fact that Kevin Smith’s Celebrity Playlist was rejected by Apple. They said the playlist he created was fantastic… but his explanations on each song were, they said in a nutshell, too wordy. They wanted him to pare the explanations down. He refused to do so, and then politely declined to let them publish it. I say good for him! You shouldn’t have to censor yourself simply for space when you know the provider has ample space.
Which leads me to create a playlist for all the Esoterik Blog’s readers to mull over. Opening iTunes, I gave my parameters for the list. Using the “All Faves” list, I told it to generate a ten song playlist and pick the songs at random. I could have just told it to fetch my top ten most listened, but that wouldn’t be as interesting, now would it? Here it is, artist and title:
Rush – Middletown Dreams: A thoughtful, looking-glass type of a song from their power-themed album, “Power Windows”. It’s main theme is about the drive to do something different from the ordinary. I think we can all identify with that!
A Flock Of Seagulls – I Ran (So Far Away): Yes, it’s pure 80’s cheese… but the sound of that chorus is so catchy and powerful! It actually has a decent guitar solo, for being radio pop.
Helloween – I Can: For being a program, iTunes seems to have a sense of humour. From “I Ran” to “I Can” with iTunes! All joking aside, it’s a song to listen to when you need a positive boost, either in a race… or at work!
X Marks The Pedwalk – Maximum Pace: I just like the feel of this song. Makes me feel like flying at 350 mph… two feet from the ground. Maximum pace, indeed.
Ohmori Kinuko – Konya Wa Hurricane: From the translated lyrics, the title means, “There’s a hurricane tonight”. I couldn’t get any good info on this Japanese singer, who sang this with a backing pop-rock band for the opening episode of the Bubblegum Crisis anime series. All I knew, back in the late 80’s, is that this is the first really good rock tune I’d ever heard come from a japanimation series!
Dokken – In My Dreams: One of the best songs to come out of 80’s metal. Ever. This is simply a classic in any hard rock fan’s heart. The scorching guitar solo from George Lynch alone makes the song worth any money spent for it!
Orgy – Fiction (Dreams In Digital): Here we go again; iTunes put two “dreamy” tracks together (groan!). As for the band, how can you go wrong with a name like Orgy? This song, and the rest of the album Vapor Transmission, gave the world a taste of their brand of cyber-rock.
Theocracy – The Healing Hand: For all the Christian metalheads out there! This is a song that details Jesus’ life as depicted in the first four books of the New Testament. The ending, where He is resurrected, is depicted in an extremely gripping, powerful way musically. This is Christian power/epic metal at it’s finest!
Yngwie J. Malmsteen – Rising Force: Love him or hate him, it’s just who he is. This neo-classical shredder first gripped my ears with this song. I was so impressed with the energy of the music and his musicianship, I ended up buying all of his albums before “Odyssey”, the album this song is from.
Tony MacAlpine – Ghost Of Versailles: If you love to dabble in both keyboard and guitar like I do, this guy provides good inspiration. I first heard of him playing keyboards on Vinnie Moore’s first solo album, and I thought I was listening to a guitar through a synth module. I couldn’t believe anyone could play the keys that fast! Back to this song, this is a good jam showcasing both light and heavy sides of his guitar playing.
That’s all I have for now… next entry may be a video or two. Stay tuned!
